We often say at the best salon Sydney, Murphy Gozzard, that hair is about so much more than hair. It has heart. It brings people together. It makes us feel amazing. And it is often deeply entrenched in culture and our heritage. With discussions around cultural appropriation and gender norms continuing, we are proud to be a part of the conversation to make sure our entire community feels included. Watching the recent SAG awards we were captivated by the incredible look on the stunning Hoyeon Jung of Squid Games. Once we dug a little deeper we fell in love even more with the special meaning behind this look.
Hoyeon Jung ended up taking home the trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series and as the Global Ambassador for Louis Vuitton, she was styled in a custom gown by the brand that paid homage to her home country and heritage. But the very special touch was the inclusion of a matching daenggi, a traditional Korean hair ribbon used to complement and decorate braided hair. This beautiful piece featured traditional Korean embroidery work and turned the style into an iconic hair moment.
Created by master stylist Jenny Cho, there was a lot of thought put into perfecting this braid. Hair was first blowdried, then straightened to tame her naturally wavy hair towards the nape of the neck. The hair was then pulled back and brushed as much as possible to ensure a clean and sleek pony, carefully positioning the ponytail about three fingers up from the nape of the neck right underneath the occipital bone. Jenny shares. The pony was set a little higher than right at the nape as it showed off her beautiful neck more and it felt modern yet not too literal to the traditional braids.
The glossy and shiny look was then worked into a classic three-strand braid and secured with an elastic band before adding the beautiful Korean tie that was made to pair with her stunning dress.
We love that this stunning look adds so much meaning to the typical red carpet look and so fitting for her history making win.
